The bond between McCarthy Building Cos. offices and its hard-hat construction sites has “gotten stronger” in the view of the Newport Beach Senior Vice President Paul King.
“Because we were an essential business during COVID, we found a way to work safely from the office because our job sites had to remain operational,” King said.
The company came in at No. 5 on this year’s Business Journal rankings of the Best Places to Work in Orange County, in the large employer category (see list).
“We also have our leadership go out to the job sites pretty frequently to host meetings there, to listen to the teams to make them feel engaged,” King told the Business Journal on June 20.
“We also try to make sure that when we’re on the job site that it feels like a little bit of a sub-culture or family out there, so everyone’s pulling in the same direction.”
McCarthy employees can make up anywhere from 15% to 50% of those on construction sites while the remainder include a variety of contractors and subcontractors.
Offices Refurbished
The local office at 20401 SW Birch St. has also been refurbished, as are other McCarthy offices.
Right-size cubicles are provided along with proper social distancing.
The company also has a hybrid work policy, allowing for remote work about one day a week when needed, according to King, who is also the Newport Beach office leader.
The company “offers up our office to all of our job sites that they’re welcome to come in and enjoy the benefits of the office,” he said.
“It’s available to anybody who’s a McCarthy employee.”
McCarthy, an employee-owned company based in St. Louis, has left its imprint all over Orange County.
Some notable projects it has worked on include John Wayne Airport, Terminal C; UCI Health Center for Advanced Care; and Soka Performing Arts Center in Aliso Viejo.
McCarthy is also taking part in construction of the UCI Health’s $1.3 billion hospital complex going up along Jamboree Road in Irvine.
Employee Golf Perk
Employees enjoy plenty of perks to help their workday go smoothly, including a gym, a large training space as well as kitchens and cafés.
And there’s one more thing—a golf simulator is on the way.
“We do have a little bit of fun in the construction industry,” King said of the offices at 20401 SW Birch St.
Founded in 1864, it is the oldest privately held national construction company in the U.S.
The Newport Beach office has 355 employees. The office is on two floors, totaling 42,152 square feet.
The company changed to a full “paid time off” policy rather than a vacation and sick day policy while an online mental health support is also available, according to King.
“We offer really good benefits from stock participation along with 401(k),” including a maternity and paternity program, King said. “We’ve got some of the best health insurance, I think, in our industry.”
