The Fountain Valley man accused of stealing the identity—and a $1.4 million tax refund—of Irvine Company Chairman Donald Bren has struck a deal with prosecutors, pleading guilty to one count of bank fraud.
Moundir Kamil, dubbed the “Give Me More Bandit” for his part in a series of 2003 local bank robberies, on Monday changed his plea to guilty to one count of bank fraud, according to court records.
A plea deal had been expected since early May.
Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 19, according to court records.
Kamil was accused of setting up an account at the Cerritos branch of East West Bank under Bren’s name early last year.
He’s also suspected of withdrawing most of the stolen tax refund last year, before being apprehended in September.
Bren is Orange County’s wealthiest businessman, with a real estate fortune estimated to be $12 billion.
The bizarre story, first reported in the Business Journal, got national attention.
Kamil had been under house arrest awaiting trial.
