AROUND THE COUNTY

Projects, developments and other activity in cities in and around OC

GARDEN GROVE

A housing development called Century Village is planned for Garden Grove and Century Boulevards, near the Civic Center. The three-acre development calls for 53 single-family homes ranging from 1,700 to 2,200 square feet. The homes likely will be priced in the mid-$400,000s. The development will be part of the 6.4-acre Century Triangle, which originally was intended to be a mixed-use residential and retail center. Construction crews are grading the land and expect to start on the model homes by the end of the year. The architect is Irvine-based KTGY Group Inc. Brandywine Homes, also based in Irvine, is the developer and contractor. Other developers originally were tapped for the project, but left due to market conditions. Brandywine took over in 2008 and got approval to rezone the land for Century Village. The first homes are expected to go up for sale by April 2011.

TUSTIN

Ricoh Electronics Inc. is getting a green makeover at its operations next to the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway north of East Warner Avenue. The company is part of Tokyo-based Ricoh Co., and makes digital cameras, copiers, fax machines, scanners, printers and other electronics. The plan calls for about 1,000 silicone crystal solar panels on the building’s rooftop. Novato-based SPG Solar has been hired as the supplier and contractor. The solar panels will generate about 10% of the company’s electricity supply, saving more than $56,000 a year. The cost of the project was not disclosed but federal and state government incentives are expected to offset it by 60%. The company plans to recoup the rest of the installation costs through energy efficiency in about five years. The panels are expected to be finished by early 2011.

LAGUNA NIGUEL

Monument Restaurant Group, a franchisee of Virginia-based Five Guys Burgers & Fries that recently opened a restaurant in Huntington Beach, has plans for two more at Ocean Ranch Village in Laguna Niguel and in Newport Beach. The contractors have not yet been selected and the restaurants are expected to cost about $500,000 each to build.

SANTA ANA

John Wayne Airport has named three food and beverage shops that will be added to its specialty concession leases: San Clemente-based Caterina’s, San Francisco-based Vino Volo, and Connecticut-based Subway, which is owned by the Doctor’s Associates Inc. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2011 after all the leases have been signed. The architects and contractors have not yet been selected. Construction costs are being determined.
