ANAHEIM
Construction continues off East Ball Road near the Orange (57) Freeway in an expansion of the headquarters of Extron Electronics Inc., an Anaheim-based maker of electronics for video display systems. A six-story, 200,000-square-foot building is going up on a former parking lot at the company’s campus. The building is set to serve as Extron’s new headquarters with product development, sales and marketing, and other executive functions. Extron already has about 500,000 square feet of space in Anaheim. The building, which began construction in March and is set to be done by mid-2011, will include a 9,000-square-foot steakhouse and country music theater dubbed The Ranch, a labor of love for Extron founder An-drew Edwards. The project’s cost is estimated at $28 million. The builder is Pasadena-based C.W. Dri-ver, which recently topped out the building’s steel frame. The designer is Irvine-based GAA Architects. Extron, which owns the land, is serving as the developer.
BUENA PARK
Renovations are under way at a shopping center near Knott’s Berry Farm. Five buildings are being remodeled, including three that are vacant. The empty buildings used to house a tire repair shop, an auto rental service and an acupuncture practice. The vacant buildings total 10,000 square feet and are slated to be finished this month. No tenants have been signed yet. The other two spots house a Radio Shack and a Millennium Outlet clothing store, which are open during remodeling. Honolulu-based Sam Sung Development Co. recently bought the center. It’s the company’s first project in California. The architects are John Okita and Don Umemoto. New York-based Prostar Construction is the contractor.
YORBA LINDA
St. Jude Medical Center is moving forward with plans to build a medical office building on Rose Drive and Bastanchury Road. Ontario-based Fullmer Construction is laying the foundation for the 88,000-square-foot, one-story building. The building is set to replace an existing St. Jude medical office. Construction started in December and is slated to finish early next year. Construc-tion costs are estimated at $20 million. San Diego-based Pacific Medical Buildings LLC is developing the building for St. Jude. Fullmer Construction is the contractor. Irvine-based Ware Malcomb is the architect.
IRVINE
A middle school is going up on Jeffrey and Trabuco roads. The school, dubbed PA 40 until officials select a formal name, is set to take 20 acres of land west of the Santa Ana (I-5) Freeway. The school has been in the works for years but was delayed after Newport Beach-based Irvine Company delayed plans for homes in the area. Irvine Unified School District expects to save $10 million by building now, due to construction costs that have been lowered by the recession and slow recovery. The school’s two-building plan calls for a locker facility and classroom building. The classroom building is set to be divided into four areas, each with a village theme. The school is modeled after nearby South Lake Middle School. The design includes reclaimed irrigation water, sustainable materials, natural light and energy-efficient air conditioning. The project is estimated at $16 million and is set to be complete by fall 2011. C.W. Driver is the builder. The school is designed by San Clemente-based PJHM Architects.
