HEALTHY DONATION

Philanthropists George and Julia Argyros gave $2.5 million on behalf of the Argyros Family Foundation to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian on May 3.

The presentation coincided with Hoag’s annual Nurse’s Day event. The Hoag Hospital Foundation said the facility plans to use the donation to expand educational nursing initiatives there.

Robert Braithwaite, chief executive and president of Hoag; Rick Martin, senior vice president, clinical operations, and chief nursing officer at Hoag; and Flynn A. Andrizzi, president of Hoag Hospital Foundation and senior vice president of Hoag, accepted the check on behalf of the organization.

The Nurse of the Year was registered nurse Candi Rogers, an oncology charge nurse.

Gena Reed, cofounder of Paragon Biomedical and a board member of Clinipace Worldwide Inc., presented a $500,000 gift to Girls Inc. of Orange County at the organization’s annual “Day of Gratitude” luncheon, hosted by First American Trust in Santa Ana.

Reed made the donation in memory of her late husband, Nick Reed, who died last year after battling cancer.

The gift from the Gena & Nick Reed Family Trust will be used for scholarships for elementary school-age programs at the Costa Mesa-based Youth & Family Center and for college scholarships for girls who have participated in Girls Inc.’s high school programming.
