A look at people, companies and institutions receiving awards, accolades, grants and other honors

Children’s Hospital of Orange County recognized Newport Beach’s Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian for its support of CHOC projects. Hoag recently donated $1.8 million to support diabetes-prevention programs. Hoag also pledged $1 million to support CHOC’s seven-story patient care tower, which is set to open in 2013 at the hospital’s campus in Orange.

The newly renamed UC Irvine Douglas Hospital in Orange, formerly UCI Medical Center, received a silver medal of honor for its commitment to supporting organ and tissue donation. The hospital had 28 donors and 77 organs transplanted in the last two years, which was the most of any hospital recognized in the greater Los Angeles area.

The Anaheim Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau received the MarCom 2010 Platinum Award for its “Walking on Sunshine” video. The two-minute video showcases popular Orange County spots. The bureau also received an honorable mention for its campaign of the same name. The awards recognize creative achievements by marketing and communication groups. It is sponsored by the Arlington, Texas-based Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals.

Megan Braun, an alumnus of University of California, Irvine, is the school’s first Rhodes Scholar. Braun graduated with a bachelor’s in history and a minor in philosophy. During her time at UC Irvine, she served as president of the student government for two years. She plans to pursue a master’s in international relations at University of Oxford in Britain.

The Anaheim Convention Center received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. The LEED rating system ranks buildings that satisfy certain green building criteria. The point-based system is administered by the U.S. Green Building Council in Washington, D.C. Thirteen other convention centers in the country are LEED certified.

Local Splash, a Fountain Valley-based marketing company, earned a spot on the Inc. 500 list of fastest-growing companies. It ranked No. 8 in the greater Los Angeles area and No. 113 nationally. Local Splash uses business directories from Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. to increase the visibility of companies.
