PEOPLE

Shahzad Malik has joined Newport Beach-based Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth as chair of the law firm’s corporate tax practice.

Malik, who started at the end of March, is filling a gap created by last month’s departures of Stradling’s two former tax partners, Stephen Freeman and Gregory Hartker, who left for the Irvine office of K&L Gates LLP.

Malik, a shareholder in the firm, said he’s been working on tax aspects of deals Stradling had in the works upon his arrival.

Longer term, he said his goal is to build the tax department as a service provider to other departments and by bringing on clients of his own.

He calls himself “more user-friendly” than typical tax lawyers with a blog on private equity tax issues (https://privateequitytaxblog.blogspot.com) and social media networking.

“I go out there and try to get my name out,” he said.

Malik started his career in corporate work for what’s now Borden Ladner Gervais LLP in Toronto. He also was a partner at Century City’s Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP.

Before joining Stradling, he was at TroyGould PC in Los Angeles.

Deals he’s worked on include the 2006 private equity buyout of Clear Channel Communications Inc. and the 2009 acquisition of Irvine medical device maker Endocare Inc. by HealthTronics Inc. of Austin, Texas.

Malik grew up in Ottawa to parents of Pakistani descent.

He got his law degree from the University of Ottawa School of Law and his master of laws degree from New York University.

Malik lives with his family in the Glendale area and plans to eventually move to Orange County.

His wife, Tanveer Hussain, practices internal medicine at Kaiser Permanente in Brea. The couple has a 2-year-old son and newborn twin daughters.

In his spare time, Malik likes mountain biking, skiing and tennis.
