Dianne, Loretta to Hoag’s Rescue; Jerry Lewis Out-Hammed

Is Jim in another real estate crunch? Are Nick and Stacey near a divorce settlement? Oh, the drama of the $21 million loan-yacht dispute between Jim Baldwin and Henry “Nick” Nicholas (see page 1) … The rest of the story: Newport Beach-based Hoag Memorial’s new $85 million Irvine hospital benefited from (was maybe even saved by) a last-minute change to the federal healthcare reform bill. Back in April, U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez said she didn’t decide to vote for the controversial Obama-backed bill until procuring a last-minute “fix” for an unidentified “clinic/hospital situation in OC.” Some speculated the reference was to the expanding UCI Douglas Hospital in Orange, next to Sanchez’ congressional district. But Newport Beach businessman Peter Ueberroth, whose wife Ginny sits on the Hoag board, revealed otherwise during remarks last week at the UCI Merage School’s Real Estate Awards luncheon. His account, now fleshed out by Sanchez and others: Hoag had halted construction because the bill’s ban on future doctor-owned hospitals would have scuttled a key feature of Hoag Irvine—a 70-bed orthopedic institute jointly owned by the hospital and a group of prominent surgeons. Republican Ueberroth turned to an “old friend” he has supported politically, Democrat U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein. She and Sanchez got the effective date for the ban delayed from Aug. 1 until Dec. 31—long enough for the Hoag Orthopedic Institute to open this week. (Several other doctor-owned facilities around the country also are scrambling to beat the deadline.) The Insider notes the irony of North County Democrat Sanchez intervening for a project in GOP Congressman John Campbell’s South County District. Neither Campbell nor the rest of OC’s Republican delegation was in a position to help Hoag—they were all opposing the healthcare reform bill. Ueberroth showed his appreciation to Sanchez by throwing a campaign fundraiser for her; she beat back a heated election challenge from Assemblyman Van Tran …
