Buffett, Gross Top Bloomberg Survey; Playoffs Sans Pringle

The stock market professionals who subscribe to Bloomberg differ over whether it’s best to follow a bull or a bear, but a plurality agree the world’s top two investment advisers both hang around Orange County. Stock market bull and part-time Emerald Bay resident Warren Buffett was named best assessor of financial markets by 23% of the 1,452 investors, traders and analysts around the world who were randomly polled for Bloomberg by Des Moines, Iowa-based Selzer & Co. “Bond King” and stock market bear Bill Gross of Newport Beach’s Pimco was runner-up, with 16% of the votes. Following at around 10% were Democratic Party patron George Soros and two “doomsters,” New York University prof Nouriel Roubini and investment analyst Marc Faber. Ben Bernanke and Alan Greenspan were in single digits …

Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle, still smarting from the Angels’ “Los Angeles” name battle, said his schedule didn’t permit him to attend any of the playoff games at Angel Stadium, and the city’s seats were given away to local charities. Kia slipped four spots to 14th, but its Sportage small SUV was one of the top-rated models, as were Hyundai’s Tucson small SUV and Elantra sedan. Toyota, with a sizable OC presence and its U.S. HQ in Torrance, moved up from fourth to third …

The Insider notes that VCer Chuck Martin is a big supporter of UCI, yet his Viewpoint (see page 67) challenges assumptions about global warming, a field near and dear to some of the university’s most celebrated and well-funded researchers. Martin lauds the UCI earth sciences program as “world class” but adds, “Good science always needs a provocateur, someone to challenge conventional wisdom.”
