WHY: Runs California’s largest nonprofit provider of after-school and expanded learning programs. Founded in 1997 with a single afterschool learning center in Costa Mesa, invested personal funds and bootstrapped the organization as volunteer board chair while tending to his day job as a stockbroker and later as a corporate CEO.
IN THE NEWS: In September merged with Orenda Education, a top school improvement and professional development consultancy. Combined organization will serve more than 200,000 students across the state with more than $150M in annual revenue.
NOTABLE: Co-author of “Think Together, How You Can Play a Role in Improving Education in America.” Serves on various boards and as a senior fellow at UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs.
