Three Orange County-based automakers, Kia America Inc., Hyundai Motor America and Mazda North American Operations (MNAO), reported declines ranging from 28% to 64% in May unit sales compared to the year prior.
The downturns were the result of semiconductor shortages and international lockdowns impacting the global automotive market, according to Reuters.
Irvine-based Kia reported total May sales of 57,941 units, a 28% decrease from the year prior. Despite the overall decline, sales for its electrified models are up 132% from the year prior.
Fountain Valley-based Hyundai reported 59,432 units in May, a 30% decrease from a year ago.
Mazda reported sales dropped 64% to 15,312 units.
Genesis, the luxury brand of Hyundai, didn’t immediately report today.
