Football clips digitally delivered for free, Twitter maps and Zoom telegrams: Orange County’s creative use of technology is booming during the coronavirus pandemic. Here is a roundup of some notable examples:
NFL DRAFT
Artificial intelligence firm Veritone Inc. of Costa Mesa is offering free access to DraftClips.com for the first time during the pandemic and, anticipating success, plans to do so in future years as well.
The service provides fans with free access to exclusive collegiate football clips and highlights of players projected to be selected early in this year’s NFL draft, scheduled to begin on Thursday.
Veritone (Nasdaq: VERI) is considering a similar service for the NBA draft scheduled for June 25.
MEDICINE
Telemedicine may permanently alter the doctor-patient relationship. Huntington Beach-headquartered physicians’ group Landmark Health LLC said that in the final 16 days of March it saw a more than 1,200% increase in the company’s use of video and phone visits across 14 states, with a focus on older adults.
The organization says the tech tools complement urgent and necessary in-person services by a medical professional using personal protective equipment (PPE).
ARTS
Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, the hilltop culture center along San Clemente’s coast, is offering programs called Live Virtually @ The Casa to let people “experience world-class arts and culture from the comfort of your own home.”
ANNUAL MEETINGS
Irvine-based homebuilder TRI Pointe Group Inc. (NYSE: TPH) will hold its annual meeting in a virtual format on Wednesday, April 22, while data analytics software maker Alteryx Inc. (NYSE: AYX) might go the virtual route on May 20, depending on the pandemic.
CALL CENTERS
Convoso, a virtual call center software provider based in Los Angeles, says a number of organizations in Orange County are using its web-based product to support businesses shifting from offices to a work-from-home environment during the coronavirus crisis.
They include Lending 3, a mortgage company in Fountain Valley, and the Costa Mesa offices of Momentum Solar, according to Convoso.
MARKETING
Blue C Advertising of Costa Mesa is helping clients with high-tech marketing including the development of virtual trade shows that are available for viewing 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as well as video distribution with company updates to existing customers to maintain them rather than lose them.
University of California-Irvine scientists have developed a coronavirus Twitter map that shows social media reactions to COVID-19 and lets users “view the growth and transformation of social media activity as the contagion spreads.”
WEBINARS & EVENTS
UCI Beall Applied Innovation has been posting various virtual events, including a webinar on “How Startups and Angel Investors Can Survive the COVID-19 Economic Crisis.”
SINGING TELEGRAMS
The Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana—co-sponsored by the city and California State University-Fullerton—has arranged for free singing telegrams “delivered by” artist-in-residence Pablo Helguera, completely free via Zoom through May 28 as a way to perk people up.
