STARTUPS & INNOVATIONS

 NEW HIRES

Diality Inc., an Irvine developer of an in-home hemodialysis machine, has added Dan Guthrie as chief business officer.

Guthrie was most recently chief commercial officer at Pennsylvania-based Neuronetics Inc. (Nasdaq: STIM), where he led the company’s commercial expansion efforts following its initial public offering in 2018. The company, which focuses on psychiatric disorders, reported 2020 revenue of $49.2 million; last week, it had a $373 million market cap. He has held senior roles at Novanta, Zimmer Biomet, Medtronic, and Fleet Laboratories.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Diality team during this next, crucial stage of its development as we finalize our go-to market strategy for the company,” Guthrie said.

“Today, the United States alone spends over $50 billion annually to treat over 600,000 dialysis patients and that number is at pace to grow to nearly 800,000 patients by 2030. Given changes to Medicare reimbursement, our technology offers significant potential to provide value to patients, providers, and payers as the category evolves from a volume to a value-based care model over the next decade.”

In-home dialysis is often overlooked because the machinery is difficult to manage. Diality says it’s designing a machine that automates setup and daily use so that patients feel comfortable using in-home treatments without the need for pre-mixed dialysate bags or external water treatment.

The company has raised $59.5 million in funding since its 2014 inception and has over 30 employees.

FINANCING

Lake Forest-based FreightPOP, a developer of cloud-based logistics and transportation management software, has raised $6 million in a seed round led by Mercato Partners of Salt Lake City.

As part of the funding, the company named to its board Mercato Managing Director Davis Warnock. The funding came from Mercato Partners’ Prelude venture fund, which seeks entrepreneurs in underserved markets disrupting the status quo with innovative technologies.

“FreightPOP is uniquely positioned to improve and speed all aspects of today’s global transportation management system by eliminating waste and delay,” Warnock said in a statement.

Started in 2016 by industry veterans Kurt Johnson, Doug Henrriquez and Justin Dickson, FreightPOP is designing cloud-based software “that makes logistics simple.” It says manufacturers, retailers, ecommerce providers and distributors can integrate FreightPOP into their existing technology stacks to manage costs and ensure timely supply, enabling a comprehensive view of their transportation logistics.

FreightPOP also said it appointed Shane Page as vice president of engineering; Page previously worked at HP, Epsilon, and Dealer Socket.
