PHILANTHROPY

Share the Love

Seven hundred Pacific Investment Management Co. employee volunteers, friends and family members gathered at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa on Dec. 12 to pack 16,000 holiday meals for Southern California families in need.

The PIMCO Foundation, PIMCO’s charitable giving and employee volunteer program, sponsored the eighth annual Share the Harvest event in Newport Beach. The boxes were donated to the Orange County Food Bank and its member agencies.

The event follows a similar one in New York City where 250 PIMCO volunteers packed 2,500 holiday meal boxes for the Food Bank For New York City.

“We are delighted to partner again with the Food Bank For New York City and the OC Food Bank,” said Doug Hodge, chief executive of PIMCO and president of the PIMCO Foundation. “These organizations are doing important work in our local communities, and Share the Harvest offers our PIMCO volunteers the opportunity to give back and do our part in serving those in need.”

Share the Harvest has provided meals for 308,000 individuals in Orange County and New York City since its inception in 2007.

Honoring Those Who Give

The event, held at the Hotel Irvine, drew more than 800 people, including business leaders and philanthropists.

The event’s honorees included National Philanthropy Day founder Doug Freeman, who received the Founder Award. Freeman, who lives in Newport Beach and is executive vice president and director of Trust Services and Consulting at First Foundation Bank, conceived the idea of National Philanthropy Day in the early 1980s and saw it proclaimed as a day by President Ronald Reagan in 1986. Freeman was praised by the event’s speaker, AFP President and Chief Executive Andrew Watt.

Other honorees included Donnie Crevier, owner and president of Crevier Classic Cars, given the Outstanding Philanthropist Award; HKA Inc. Marketing Communications in Tustin, which received the Outstanding Small Business Award; Sandy Segerstrom Daniels, managing partner of C.J. Segerstrom & Sons, who was awarded the Legacy Award; KIA Motors America in Irvine, which received the Outstanding Mid-Size Corporation Award; and the Word & Brown Cos. in Orange, given the Outstanding Large Corporation Award.

Building Better Futures

The Orange County Council Boy Scouts of America raised more than $175,000 at the 34th annual Construction Industry Good Scout Award Luncheon on Nov. 18.

The event drew more than 300 business leaders, philanthropists, and supporters who came together to raise funds in support of the Boy Scouts’ mission to “develop tomorrow’s leaders today through adventure and activities that instill values and teach life skills.”

It honored William H. Lyon, who is William Lyon Homes’ co-chief executive and board of directors vice chairman, and his father, retired Air Force Gen. William Lyon, who serves as executive chairman and vice chairman of the board at William Lyon Homes.

“Bill and his father, General Lyon, exemplify the traits of the Scout Oath and Law and set a wonderful example of leadership for young men to emulate,” said Jeff Herrmann, president and scout executive of the Orange County Council.
