Organ Donor Ads Promote 2nd Chances

A handful of drivers came pretty close to getting a traffic ticket but missed out thanks to a campaign created by Costa Mesa-based ad agency Casanova McCann.

Created for client Donate Life California, drivers filmed in the ads were pulled over for minor traffic violations and were given a second chance after an officer saw a pink organ donor sticker on their California driver’s license.

The roughly two-minute video, titled “Second Chances,” was unveiled last month as part of April’s Donate Life Month.

California has the most licensed drivers of any state in the country with 45% registered as organ donors, according to the campaign’s video.

The idea was to thank registered organ donors while promoting the Second Chances initiative, which works with law enforcement to help get the word out to civilians on becoming an organ donor.

“This was a true labor of love,” said Ingrid Otero-Smart, Casanova McCann chief executive. “It took over a year to make it happen, and we are grateful to our client at Donate Life and the police chiefs who believed and supported it. It seems to be making a difference already as donor registrations are up more than 30%.”

In the video, California State University-Fullerton Police Department Chief Raymund Aguirre tells officers to “remind [residents] and thank them for being organ donors. That’s what the Second Chances program is all about.”

Casanova McCann partnered with the Fullerton and Placentia police department for the campaign, as well as CSUF’s campus police.

The ad firm ranked No. 13 among OC advertising agencies last year with an estimated $25 million in revenue, according to last month’s Business Journal annual list.
