RECENT: Family’s long history of backing local arts community took center-stage last year with $13.5 million gift to Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, largest contribution yet in arts campus’ $68 million fundraising campaign. Public town square at center will be named Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and include a stage, guest amenities. Previously donated $5 million to center’s South Coast Repertory, where theater’s Julianne Argyros Stage is located. Costa Mesa-based Pacific Mercantile Bancorp, where Carpenter is chairman, has new CEO in Tom Vertin and is switching to commercial banking model. Fed lifted enforcement action on Pac Merc in 2014 after bank boosted capital ratios. RECENT: Introducing changes to its outpatient care delivery, including what Costa calls “Life Integration,” which calls for the organization to “bring healthcare to members in new and varied means.”

Kaiser also launching Project RAD for its medical offices. Project RAD’s new features include digital membership cards, mobile physician work stations and teleconsultation capability. First Project RAD facility coming to Fullerton-La Habra area in 2017.

RECENT: In midst of $22 million fundraising to expand neonatal intensive care unit. Contemplating pursuing state license with Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego to create organization to manage care of nearly 500,000 children.

HOW: Began career with Orrville, Ohio-based J.M. Smucker Co. as sales representative, moved up to district sales manager role covering territory from San Diego to Santa Barbara. Advantage had 50 employees and $5 million in revenue when she joined as director of natural and specialty foods in 1990. She’s since held various executive positions in sales, marketing and operations, taking on CEO role in 2013 when company founder Sonny King became executive chairman.

RECENT: Company acquired 25% stake in Johannesburg, South Africa-based Smollan Group, which gave it foothold in Africa, Middle East, South America, Australia and Asia. The two companies formed Advantage Smollan, joint venture that acquired U.K.-based REL Field Marketing in June. Advantage dropped old name, Advantage Sales and Marketing LLC, in December, added Digital Technology division and named marketing arm Advantage Marketing Partners.

Worked for University of Milano at Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, was chairman of Department of Mathematics at University of Calabria. Joined George Mason University in Virginia, where he held several positions, lastly dean of College of Arts and Sciences. Joined Chapman as professor, provost in 2006. Became its first chancellor in 2007.

RECENT: Doti presided over March opening of Musco Center for the Arts, an $82 million, 1,044-seat concert and performance hall on Chapman’s campus. Also presided over groundbreaking of $130 million, 140,000-square-foot Center for Science and Technology. Struppa led creation of Chapman’s School of Pharmacy and School of Communication.

PERSONAL: Doti with son Adam climbed Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya) in Papua, Indonesia, last summer. Qualified at California International Marathon in December to run his 10th Boston Marathon next spring. Struppa has four children. RECENT: Published two best-selling books about global economy dynamics. Bloomberg LP columnist, Financial Times contributing editor. Chairperson, President Barack Obama’s Global Development Council. Invested in, joined board of directors of Payoff, Costa Mesa-based startup that aims to profit by giving qualified consumers an option to refinance and pay off credit card debt.

HOW: Currently chairman of seven companies, including computer software firm Ubix.io, and Cirro, which specializes in information technology and services. Started Select Software Tools Ltd. in England at age 26, ran it as chief executive for decade. Company went public in 1996. Frost left in 1998 when revenues were about $30 million. Co-founded DATAllegro in Aliso Viejo in 2003, sold it to Microsoft in 2008 for undisclosed amount.

RECENT: His incubator is working to raise another fund of about $250 million.

PERSONAL: Married to Julie, co-founder of DATAllegro. Two children from their marriage, four children in England from first marriage. He’s sharp with bow and arrow and considering competing at state level this year. He and Julie deeply involved with Shea Center in San Juan Capistrano, which helps people with disabilities through equine therapeutic programs. Recently overcame deep fear of “being toward the bottom of the food chain” and became certified in scuba with two sons.

Hotel slots included chief marketing officer, twice general manager, twice U.S. regional vice president, culminating in Marriott International managing director, president in 1991; expanding international operations from $300 million to $8 billion in revenue, with a presence in 73 countries, 551 hotels and 80,000 associates; retired in 2012 and started Laguna Strategic Advisors; state travel and tourism commissioner; appointed OCVA head in 2013.  

RECENT:  Growing OCVA’s sales and PR efforts in China, Mexico, India, Japan, Middle East (Dubai/UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman). Efforts in China market include expanded work with country’s largest travel site, Ctrip; free training for local businesses on culture, communication with travelers from China and Middle East. Eighth Annual Tourism Conference held this month at Segerstrom Center; OCVA trade shows attended include International Pow-Wow in Orlando in May.
