New Perspectives on Diapers, Lawyers, Football, Politics

You don’t necessarily have to do a lot to get a fresh perspective—sometimes a slight shift in vantage point is all it takes … Here’s a different perspective on Children’s Hospital of Orange County’s neonatal intensive care unit—one of the diapers for the little ones, pictured next to a quarter to give a fresh sense of the tiny lives at stake. Turn to our Special Report on Healthcare on page 17 for updates on CHOC and other hospitals here … Another fresh perspective is available on page 53, thanks to Christina Zabat-Fran, general counsel of St. John Knits. She provides a good idea of how some particularly dedicated members of OC’s legal community want to change the perspective on diversity in the ranks of their profession … Then shift again—back to page 1—for a report on the sale-leaseback of the Whittier Law School campus on Harbor Boulevard. Whittier Law has faced some challenges in recent years, but the story offers an additional perspective, with mention of its successful efforts as a catalyst for diversity … Seems those two pieces could bring new perspectives on a universal challenge, a major educational institution, and a local professional corps with no shortage of brains or capital … Our Chris Casacchia reports that Chargers owner Dean Spanos is among a contingent of employees of the NFL franchise who will seek a new perspective on the homefront. Spanos explained why he was socially solo for a welcome luncheon the team and local civic leaders hosted last week at the Center Club. “My wife could not be here. She’s out looking for a home right now.” Turn to page 1 for more on the team’s decision to set up business operations in Costa Mesa … The Center Club was where State Sen. John Moorlach offered a fresh perspective on the state’s governance while reminding a packed house at the 34th Annual Luncheon Meeting of the South Coast Metro Alliance that he’s more than a genuinely capable and dedicated public servant. He’s also a gifted politician who can serve up a pastiche of policy, outrage, humor, empathy and humility in a way that will make you watch your wallet and thank your lucky stars—a contradiction that somehow seems quite natural for California. Moorlach suggested to the crowd that the state needs a CEO—akin to the post at the county level here—to oversee the 150 or so state agencies that swamp the governor’s office. He didn’t raise his hand for the job, but the perspective he brought would make him a strong candidate in any such scenario … Hyundai Motor America got a boost from the perspective offered in the L.A. Times sports page in advance of last weekend’s Genesis Open, which sported the Fountain Valley-based auto brand’s newly launched luxury line as title sponsor. The report came just a few days after the disappointing news that Tiger Woods wouldn’t play due to injury, and a few days ahead of the rain that was expected to affect play. The Times told readers that the Genesis field would nevertheless be “the best of the season so far,” thanks in part to having eight of the top 10 players in the world in the mix … Sullivan says: special credit to Emile Haddad and National Geographic for the perspective of this column.
