The S&P 500 was up 1.2% to 2,104.71. The Dow was up 1.4% to 18,003.95. The Nasdaq was up 1.3% to 5,077.27.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond was up 2% to 2.46%.
The price of gold was up 0.8% to $1,186.
TECHNOLOGY
Irvine-based Newport Corp. was up 4.6% to $19.22 and a $759 million market cap. Benchmark Co. initiated coverage on the laser and optics products manufacturer with a “buy” rating and a price target of $25.
RETAIL
Huntington Beach-based Quiksilver Inc. declined 10.4% to 76 cents and a $130 million market cap. D.A. Davidson downgraded shares in the surfwear maker and seller from “buy” to “neutral” and cut its price target from $3 to 90 cents.
