The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.81% to 16,855.15 and the Nasdaq fell 0.79% to 4,419.49.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond fell 2.64% to 2.36%.
The price of gold was up 0.42% to $1,212.40.
APPAREL
OC apparel companies were down at midday on sector weakness and reports of stock traders betting against at least one company.
Huntington Beach-based Quiksilver Inc. was down 2.1% to $1.63 and a market cap of $279.5 million on the American Banking & Market News report that as of September 15 short-selling increased to 23.7% of the company’s shares. Quiksilver’s market value is down from more than $1 billion within the past 12 months.
Foothill Ranch-based Wet Seal Inc. was down 5.3% to 54 cents and a market cap of $45.5 million. The company’s longtime CFO resigned last week. Irvine-based Tilly’s Inc. was down 1.5% to $7.38 and a market cap of $207 million. It recently gave third quarter earnings guidance well below the consensus estimates. Anaheim-based Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. was down 1.1% to $1.83 and a market cap of $126.7 million.
