Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. in Pasadena has acquired Orange-based J.L. Patterson & Associates Inc. on undisclosed terms.
The buy gives Jacobs a wider berth in a segment that’s a specialty of Patterson’s: railroad planning, including light rail projects.
Patterson last year collaborated with STV Group Inc. in Irvine to win a three-year, $10 million Metrolink contract for track extensions and station expansions, among other work.
Jacqueline Patterson founded her company in 1990. The Business Journal estimated its 2014 revenue at $17.8 million. It had 104 employees in offices here and in Oceanside; Seattle; Jacksonville, Fla.; and Sandpoint, Idaho.
Jacobs has more than $12 billion in annual billings and traded recently at a market capitalization of $5.2 billion. It maintains an Irvine office that accounted for $16 million in billings for the year ended June 30.
Jacobs has acquired other small engineering operations in OC. Two years ago it bought some assets of Costa Mesa-based Marmac Field Services Inc., which at the time specialized in pipeline engineering services for utility and gas companies in the Western U.S.
The Costa Mesa office of financial services firm D.A. Davidson & Co. advised Patterson & Associates on its sale.
