Irvine College Starts Work On $44M Arts Village

Irvine Valley College has kicked off work on a three-building, $44 million addition to its campus.

Irvine’s primary community college, which as of October served about 5,000 full-time students and an additional 6,300 part-time students, earlier this month held a groundbreaking event for a long-planned Arts Village addition to the campus.

The village will house the IVC’s School of the Arts in one main area of campus, while allowing room for future expansion, it said.

The school will include space for studio arts, art history, music, digital media art, interactive media arts, and dance classes, according to the school.

The new facilities will also hold individual music practice rooms, rehearsal rooms, two dance studios, studios for painting, digital and interactive media, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, assembly space, and a gallery. A time frame for completion was undisclosed.

62K-SF Project

The project will total 62,500 square feet, and will be in a core area quad, according to IVC, which along with Saddleback College in Mission Viejo is part of the South Orange County Community College District.

McCarthy Cos. is the project’s contractor, DLR Group is the architect, and Bernards is the construction manager.

The district is expected to pay for nearly 60% of the $44 million project, with the state picking up most of the other costs, according to prior district public documents related to the project’s funding.

IVC is just off Jeffrey Road, across the street from the Oak Creek Golf Club on Irvine Center Drive. It’s on some 60 acres and currently counts close to 20 buildings.

The new additions are being built next to the school’s 58,600-square-foot performing arts center, which opened in 2007 and is the largest building on campus, according to SOCCCD’s website.
