The home at 88 Linda Isle in Newport Beach sold on Feb. 27 for $9.72 million. The estate is considered a piece of Southern California history, according to the seller’s agent.
It was built in 1972 for Robert and Shirlee Guggenheim, philanthropists whose family established the Guggenheim Foundation, and whose support helped numerous organizations grow, including Children’s Hospital of Orange County. Robert Guggenheim headed Big Brothers of Orange County and the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Orange County. He founded Angelitos de Oro, a fundraising group for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, was president of the Newport Harbor Art Museum—one of the precursors of the Orange County Museum of Art—served as a trustee of what was Chapman College, and volunteered for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Orange County. The couple lived in the home until Robert died in 1991.
The five-bedroom, eight-bath home sits on a 7,500-square-foot parcel on the water on Linda Isle. The 6,587-square-foot property boasts 105 feet of water frontage. Its private pier allows for a boat up to 85 feet long and is said to be one of the largest individually owned yacht accommodations in the harbor.
It also features a bayside patio and a lagoon-style swimming pool and spa.
The sale was represented by Marilyn Read and Arthur Jeppe of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage on the seller’s side and by Douglas Mitchell of Century 21 Citrus Realty Inc. on the buyer’s.
Luxury sales have been brisk in Orange County to start out the year as 59 transactions took place in the first eight weeks. There are currently 281 luxury homes on the market.
