It was about time for this one.
In a fashion landscape where hype and collaborations have become hallmarks in the new definition of luxury, the partnership between the founder of Irvine-based Stüssy and Parisian luxury house Dior seemed inevitable.
Shawn Stüssy hasn’t been affiliated with the Stüssy brand since parting ways with the business in 1996. Although, his unique scrawl is still synonymous with the brand he began in Laguna Beach in the 1980s—originally a surfboard maker that later leapt to a customer base beyond simply surf to also resonate with the fashion set.
“It has been really hard for me to keep this to myself for six months now,” Stüssy said in a social media post on the deal, which had him tapped to work with Dior, part of the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE group, on its fall 2020 collection.
The post had more than 20,000 “likes” as of last week.
Streetwear Collaborations
The luxury label’s men’s artisitic director Kim Jones has linked with brands from streetwear—a term he along with many in the industry have become averse to—and was the architect of the much-hyped collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Supreme in 2017.
“Kim has brought me out of retirement to work with him and his Dior family on fall 2020,” Stüssy said. “I gotta say here now how good a vibe and how natural this project has felt for me before this [news] breaks in a day or so.”
