Dana Point Hotel Site to Chicago Buyer?

A prospective hotel developer has bought land near Coast Highway and Dana Point Harbor Drive that was the site of a defunct inn and a more recent failed attempt to develop a 250-room hotel.

A purchase price and the name of the buyer couldn’t be determined, but Dana Point City Manager Doug Chotkevys confirmed the closing, and a hotel industry source said the buyer was affiliated with Chicago-based Singerman Real Estate LLC, led by managing partner Seth Singerman.

The site was home to the Dana Point Harbor Inn, a much smaller establishment that once operated on the 0.8-acre parcel.

The land sold in 2007 for $7.3 million to Beverly Hills Hospitality Group LLC, according to real estate tracker CoStar Group Inc. The developer proposed a five-story structure called the Doheny Hotel, but the planning commission rejected the project in April 2014, and Beverly Hills Hospitality filed for bankruptcy last September.

The industry source said Singerman bought the site out of foreclosure, adding that the Chicago investor owns a second site across the street that is connected to the new acquisition by a pedestrian overpass.

Chotkevys said no plans had been filed by the new owner.
