Fuel for the body and the soul is what The Fuel Shack is all about. Located at the southern end of Orange County in San Clemente, The Fuel Shack specializes in breakfast bagels, acai bowls, sandwiches, salads and sides, plus a variety of baked goods.
The Fuel Shack was started in 2018 by Yolanda and David Quam.
Yolanda spent 25 years as a pediatrician, including 10 years as medical director of a community clinic providing health care and health education to uninsured and underinsured residents, before she retired to fulfill her lifelong passion to open a restaurant serving nutritious breakfast and lunch foods, and gourmet coffee.
“I was encouraged by shared moments in the kitchen with my grandmother that joy, love and a warm sense of wellbeing could be expressed through food,” wrote Yolanda on her Fuel Shack website. “Fond childhood memories of home-cooked meals, especially breakfast, still linger and even now, breakfast remains an important start to my day. My intent is to inspire others to get energized about breakfast and lunch.”
Yolanda enrolled in specialized cooking courses, and traveled to Mexico, Italy, France, Fiji, Japan, New Zealand, and Tahiti to learn the foods of the areas and celebrate with the locals as they shared their recipes.
The dishes at The Fuel Shack are prepared without the use of a fryer, griddle or grill. Yolanda’s motto is “food is love,” which is in full force at The Fuel Shack.
