Costa Mesa-based Volcom Inc. has acquired Laguna Surf & Sport, which sells Volcom clothes at its Laguna Beach and Aliso Viejo stores.
Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
The stores are expected to continue operating under the Laguna Surf & Sport name with the same managers.
The move is part of a push into retail for Volcom, known for its clothes inspired by surfing, skateboarding and music.
The company runs eight U.S. stores and seven in other countries.
The company is following in the steps of the biggest surf-inspired clothing makers, Huntington Beach-based Quiksilver Inc. and Irvine’s Billabong USA, which run their own stores as well as selling through mall chains and department stores.
Volcom is among of the top selling brands at Laguna Surf & Sport, one of a handful of influential surf shops in Orange County that help set national fashion trends.
This is the second time Laguna Surf & Sport has hooked up with a clothing maker.
In 2002, Laguna Surf owner Eric “E.J.” John sold his stores for a stake in San Juan Capistrano-based Swell Inc.’s online retail operation.
John appears to have gotten back ownership of his stores as Volcom said it bought them from him.
Volcom has a market value of about $620 million and yearly sales of about $350 million.
