The California Republican Party’s three-day fall convention starts Friday in Anaheim and could be the first stop for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger after declaring his re-election bid.
The governor is expected to announce his run for re-election in 2006 in San Diego on Friday. Then he’s expected to rally the troops in a convention speech Saturday at the Anaheim Marriott.
On Wednesday, Schwarzenegger all but declared that he would run for a second term next year, saying, “I am not in this for the short run.”
The bid for a second term could boost the governor’s Nov. 8 special election platform and signal to financial donors that he intends to be around for another term to hold sway over the issues they care about.
The weekend convention includes workshops on a number of propositions supported directly or indirectly by the governor.
They include Proposition 75, a measure requiring union employee consent for how their dues are spent in political causes; Proposition 77, a measure on redistricting; and Proposition 74, designed to change teacher tenure and merit pay.
U.S Sen. George Allen of Virginia also is confirmed to speak at a Saturday luncheon, according to the convention’s Web site.
