Irvine-based Standard Pacific Corp. said Friday it bought the Bakersfield operations of Probuilt Homes, scooping up 1,000 lots for homes in the area.
The price wasn’t disclosed.
Amid a housing boom, builders have been buying lots further and further away from the coast.
The western edges of Riverside and San Bernardino counties were the first growth areas. Now cities there are becoming nearly as built out and more expensive.
Scott Stowell, who heads Standard in Southern California, said Bakersfield’s economy is growing, resulting in more housing starts there than the national average.
Standard Pacific should finish construction on the first Bakersfield homes late this year, the company said.
Probuilt has operated in Bakersfield since 1990.
Standard Pacific said it didn’t buy Probuilt’s Santa Maria operations or its backlog of presold homes.
