Seal Beach, Los Alamitos Spared

Supporters of Naval Weapons Station in Seal Beach got a brief scare Friday morning when some media outlets wrongly reported the base is closing.

Seal Beach and the neighboring Joint Forces Training Base at Los Alamitos are not on the Pentagon’s list of recommended base closures released early Friday.

A smaller facility in Northern California’s Concord that is considered a detachment of Seal Beach is on the list. That led some to mistakenly report Seal Beach was marked for closure.

The Pentagon revealed Friday a list of 150 military installations nationwide set for closure, including 33 major bases.

Eleven bases in California may be closed.

The list now goes into the hands of federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission, which gets input from local communities and has final say, expected some time around September.
