Report: Consumers Still Shelling out for Botox

Never mind the economy, I want my Botox.

It looks like people who want Irvine-based Allergan Inc.’s Botox wrinkle-smoothing injections and others are still shelling out the cash regardless of the economic meltdown, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

“Vanity appears to be trumping frugality in a looks-conscious society,” the article said.

Cosmetic doctors report many of their patients haven’t stopped spending hundreds or thousands of dollars a year to maintain their regimens in spite of the dismal economic climate, according to the report.

“It’s like comfort food,” patient Maralyn Burr of Omaha, Neb., told the Wall Street Journal about receiving injections of Botox and Restylane, a lower-face filler made by Allergan competitor Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp. of Scottsdale.

Allergan has said it expects lower sales of Botox for 2008, citing overall “subdued demand,” the Journal reported. Allergan also makes Juv & #233;derm, a lower-face filler that competes with Restylane.
