Report: Allergan Testing Eye Drug for Longer Lashes

Allergan Inc., the Irvine-based drug maker, is reported to be testing its Lumigan glaucoma as a way to lengthen eyelashes, the Wall Street Journal reported in its online edition Monday.

If Allergan is testing Lumigan for cosmetic use, it could follow in the path of flagship Botox, which Allergan turned into what the newspaper called “a cosmetic superstar” after discovering it temporarily reduces wrinkles.

The report noted that eyelash growth is a side effect of Lumigan, which contains an active ingredient called bimatoprost, which is part of a family of hormone-like substances called prostaglandins.

Allergan spokeswoman Caroline Van Hove declined to discuss any drug development, but did say it has “intellectual property in this particular area.”

The Journal reported that Allergan filed lawsuit earlier this month against several cosmetic companies, alleging their products infringe on its patent for Lumigan.

Additionally, the report also noted that some doctors are prescribing Lumigan for cosmetic use.
