GOP Split on Iraq
From Oregon to Nebraska, GOP Senators Gordon Smith and Chuck Hagel are calling on the president to rethink his position on Iraq. With blood for oil being spilled by U.S. troops daily, Smith and Hagel’s break with the White House reminds me of another public figure’s opposition to another unpopular war (Vietnam). After Walter Cronkite turned on the administration, Lyndon Johnson is reported to have said, “The war is lost.” Mr. president, now that congressional leaders in your own party are jumping ship, it’s time to swallow the same bitter pill LBJ did decades ago: your war in Iraq is lost.
