Rather Stepping Down:
I TOLD YOU SO.
More Moreno
ACKNOWLEDGING THE APPARENT BENEFITS OF A BIG-CITY DESIGNATION (AT LEAST before calculating, in the Anaheim Angels’ case, the possible alienation of the core fan base and breach-of-contract penalties), there’s persuasive evidence that owner Arte Moreno may be attributing too much magic to “Los Angeles.”
Consider that in the other two-team baseball cities,New York and Chicago, one of the teams is a permanent weak sister to the other. In fact, the Anaheim Angels now are in a stronger market position relative to the Los Angeles Dodgers than either the New York Mets are to the Yankees or the Chicago White Sox are to the Cubs.
And there’s persuasive evidence that a big-city name can even hinder a second team: The Clippers.
