Quiksilver Buying Australian Chain

Huntington Beach-based surfwear maker Quiksilver Inc. on Tuesday said it plans to buy Australian retail chain Surfection.

Surfection owns seven surfwear shops under its name. It also operates five stores that sell Quiksilver and Roxy-branded clothing, known as Quiksilver Boardriders Clubs, in New South Wales, Australia.

Quiksilver will pick up five of the seven Surfection shops and all five Quiksilver/Roxy stores in the deal. The Surfection shops are set to eventually operate under the Quiksilver Boardriders Club name.

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Chris Athas, owner of the Surfection Group, is set to become Quiksilver’s retail director for Asia Pacific, working under the company’s Asia Pacific President Clive Fitts.

The buy is part of Quiksilver’s effort to open more Boardriders Club stores in Japan, China and South East Asia, the company said. Quiksilver has some 240 Boardriders Club stores worldwide.

The news comes weeks after Quiksilver said it plans to buy France’s Skis Rossignol SA, for $312 million.

The company’s board approved a two-for-one stock split last month.
