PR Shop Global Results Plans to Hire in ‘Tech Hotbed’

Costa Mesa-based Global Results Communications expects to hire more workers in the next year as new business comes in.

The shop picked up several new accounts this year in competitive reviews, such as the Mobile Marketing Association, Telcordia Technologies Inc., Go2 Communications Inc. and Juice Wireless Inc., said Valerie Christopherson, founder and managing director of the public relations firm.

The shop, which has seven workers, launched last year. Christopherson called the area a “technology hotbed.”

“There are excellent, established PR firms in Orange County making the competition fierce and compelling at the same time,” she said.

Christopherson said she expects the firm to have a solid first year.

“The outlook is to remain steady with current business, foster a solid work environment and thrive in the changing telecommunications market,” Christopher-son said.

Register Perks

The Orange County Register in Santa Ana wants to give subscribers another reason to keep the paper: perks.

The Register is set to launch “Register Insider,” a rewards program aimed at current subscribers that lets them get discounts, access to giveaways and contests, and more, on www.insider.ocregister.com.

The site is “is a simple way to say ‘thank you’ to our longtime subscribers, and encourage new subscribers,” said Michele Viramontes, Register Insider manager.

The Register tested the idea on about 300 subscribers in South OC before the launch.

Viramontes said they “vigilantly followed and redeemed offers posted on a special Web site.”

“Based on the feedback and results of this test group, the Register decided to expand the program and launch Register Insider to all of its subscribers,” Viramontes said.

The move is part of the Register’s 15-month study of the OC market and what people want.

The paper also plans to launch the “OC Post” this month, a full-color tabloid that packages the Register’s same stories and columns in a shorter, quick-read format.

The Insider Web site includes deals and discounts, such as savings for shopping at South Coast Plaza, event tickets, such as a studio audience taping of “Jeopardy” and other content, such as new recipes or downloadable Register screensavers.

The Register plans to promote the new site through ads inside the daily paper, e-mail blasts, banners on OCRegister.com, direct mail, bus shelters, telemarketing and event marketing.

Attention Span

What’s a good way to catch some eyes during the dog hot days of summer?

Target the beach.

People along the coast couldn’t miss ads by OC businesses on a recent weekend.

In south Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa-based Hurley International, a unit of Nike Inc., has a two-sided billboard nestled above shops along Pacific Coast Highway. It’s in plain view for the throngs of tourists doing some shopping and getting air-conditioned relief.

Meantime, Santa Ana-based Wahoo’s Fish Taco aimed its name at beachgoers in Corona del Mar. A small plane flew a giant “Wahoo’s” banner above the packed beach.

More Expansion

I recently wrote about New Jersey-based MWW Group opening an Irvine office to help serve South Korea-based client Samsung Corp., among others.

Since, I’ve gotten more news.

The shop started out with three workers and plans to hire up to three more by year’s end, said Michael W. Kempner, president and chief executive of MWW, which is owned by Interpublic Group of Cos.

“We look forward to building and expanding our practice in Orange County and San Diego,” Kempner said.

Mailing List

360 Business Consulting in Mission Viejo plans to launch its first direct mail campaign for client Los Angeles-based Praxis Computing later this month.

The shop said its work for Praxis will focus on generating new clients and include a targeted prospect list, which will be used for its direct mail effort.

360 said it plans to follow up on the mailing and set appointments for Praxis sales representatives.

360 also will help Praxis design and present seminars.

Ready for Retail

W.B. Doner & Co. in Newport Beach brought in a new executive to help grow a retail marketing push at one of its biggest clients.

The shop said Robert Burgher will relocate to OC from its Southfield, Mich., headquarters to lead the development of national retail marketing for Irvine-based Mazda North American Operations.

As senior vice president and director-regional account group, Burgher will oversee Mazda’s regional marketing work in the U.S. and coordinate with the agency’s teams in Southfield, OC and elsewhere.

Burgher joined Doner in 1996 as senior vice president, directing field operations for the shop’s Ford Dealer Association accounts. In 1997, he was part of the team that helped pitch and win work with Mazda.

Bits and Pieces:

Irvine-based Shelter Post Production hired a new motion graphics artist, George Masters, who gained attention in 2005 by creating an iPod ad. Masters comes to the OC shop with 18 years experience, including working for Foxkids.com and foxfamilychannel.com Lake Forest-based The Creative Lab continues to launch more work for client American Express Travel.
