Anaheim-based Pacific Sunwear of California Inc.’s August sales at stores open at least a year fell below expectation as Wet Seal Inc. of Foothill Ranch surpassed views with another month of big gains.
PacSun’s same-store sales rose 2.6% for the month, below Wall Street’s consensus view of 3.6% growth.
The company’s dominant PacSun chain of surfwear stores saw a 3.2% rise in same-store sales last month. Its d.e.m.o. stores, which sells hip-hop clothes is struggling to overcome some fashion missteps, saw a 3.1% decline in August.
Total August sales rose 11% to $175.7 million.
Wet Seal, which is bouncing back from a long downturn, saw August same-store sales surge 48%. Analysts were looking for the women’s clothing retailer to post same-store sales growth of 33%.
The company’s total sales for the month rose 15% to $45.4 million.
