NMS closes its Tustin R & D; facility and lays off 30

Framingham, Mass.-based NMS Communications Corp. has closed its Tustin research and development office, laying off 30 engineers here.

A provider of telecommunications products and services, NMS developed networking devices at the Tustin facility. The company’s PolicyPoint provisioning system links corporate networks to the public phone network.

The company began developing PolicyPoint in 1998, and the Tustin facility began working on it last year. NMS originally predicted that the system, which handles any combination of voice, video and data on the same network, would find a growing market. But demand has proven limited with a slowdown in telecommunications spending, according to a company spokeswoman.

NMS said it has stopped the development and production of PolicyPoint altogether and has notified customers that it is being discontinued in its current form.

“There is just a lack of demand due to the supply capacity of the systems that are still being used, there is just no need for this type of management,” she said.
