Mossimo Strikes Deal With Canadian Retailer

By DEBORAH BELGUM

Mossimo Inc., the Santa Monica-based company that licenses its apparel designs to discount retailer Target Corp., has signed a three-year licensing pact with Hudson’s Bay Co., Canada’s largest and oldest department store chain.

Starting next spring, Mossimo clothes will be sold in more than 320 Zellers stores, a division of Hudson’s Bay that is modeled after Target stores.

“It will be an apparel line that is similar to what is found in the U.S.,” said Manny Marrero, chief financial officer for Mossimo, the label started in Orange County by designer Mossimo Giannulli in the late-1980s.

The clothing is set to carry the Mossimo label and include men’s women’s, boy’s, girl’s and infant apparel.

It also includes watches, sunglasses, underwear and swimwear.

Mossimo moved from Irvine to Santa Monica in 2000 after hitting hard times. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2000 and shifted from producing clothes to licensing its designs.

The Target pact has revived the company, though most of the revenue from Mossimo products goes to the retailer with the company collecting a royalty.
