Moore Wallace to Close Brea Plant
By SHERRI CRUZ
Moore Wallace Inc. plans to close its 55,000-square-foot Veriad label making plant in Brea by the end of the month.
About 105 workers are set to be laid off, according to the state’s Employment Development Department, which requires companies to post notices warning of potential layoffs.
Julie Gottlieb, investor relations representative for Moore Wallace, said the company doesn’t comment on closings.
Local sources at the company said Moore Wallace is streamlining operations after May’s acquisition of Lisle, Ill.-based rival Wallace Computer Services Inc. by Canada’s Moore Corp.
The $1.3 billion deal created Mississauga, Ontario-based Moore Wallace, which makes business forms and labels, prints business publications and runs other businesses. The company counts yearly sales of about $2.5 billion.
Some of Moore Wallace’s Brea workers may move to other company locations. Moore Wallace also has a direct mail production plant in La Palma.
The company announced plans to close plants after buying Wallace. In July, Moore Wallace closed a plant in Dallas.
The company has a number of plants and distribution facilities scattered across the U.S. and Canada.
The company also has offices in New York, Illinois and Connecticut.
What was then Moore Corp. bought Brea’s United Ad Label Co. in 1997.
Founded in 1958, United Ad Label made labels for the medical market. Moore changed the operation’s name to Veriad in 2000.
