Mindspeed Technologies Inc. joined just about every other local chipmaker Tuesday by announcing a design center in India.
The Newport Beach chipmaker for the telecommunications industry said the Hyderabad center will provide development and customer support for many of Mindspeed’s products, including its key Web-based phone chips.
Earlier this year, Mindspeed said it was planning to open a design center in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The center is slated at the Dubai Silicon Oasis, a planned city that’s developing as a chip center.
Dubai offered some financial incentives to attract Mindspeed. At the time the company said the competitive environment in India doesn’t bode well for a smaller company such as Mindspeed, which is looking to have just 25 workers in Dubai.
Mindspeed said the India design center will initially be staffed with roughly 15 engineers and that number would climb in the future.
Raouf Halim, Mindspeed’s chief executive, said India offers “a breadth of talented and dedicated engineering resources.”
