Hologic Inc., a medical device maker, said Thursday that it plans to buy BioLucent Inc., an Aliso Viejo-based medical device maker, for $70 million.
BioLucent makes the MammoPad, a cushion used during mammograms to reduce discomfort. It had sales of some $17 million last year.
The deal is expected to close by the end of September, after regulatory and shareholder approvals.
In a release, BioLucent said it would spin off its brachytherapy device business into an new company, Cianna Medical, concurrently with the closing of the Hologic deal. BioLucent’s Savi device, which places radiation at or near the source of cancer, is in what’s called a “controlled market launch.”
Hologic, which is publicly traded and based in Bedford, Mass., makes medical imaging systems for women’s healthcare, including digital radiography and breast imaging.
