The Orange County Business Journal has tapped Julie Leupold to double-team its managing editor post.
Leupold was managing editor of Los Angeles-based Cali-
fornia Real Estate Journal, a weekly newspaper covering real estate across the state.
As part of the paper’s coverage, Leupold oversaw stories on Orange County, including on The Irvine Company, Bixby Land Co. and deals and development here.
The paper took a dozen national and local awards during her time as managing editor.
For the Business Journal, Leupold will help produce the paper each week, including special reports, columns, news stories and other duties.
She’ll work alongside editor Michael Lyster and managing editor Alisha Gomez.
Business journalism wasn’t an obvious career move for Leupold, who made her way to real estate after stints at People magazine, Women’s Enews and short-lived Grace fashion magazine.
Bored of celebrity parties and the latest plus-sized fashion craze, Leupold started working for Real Estate Media in New York and found a passion for money, or at least the stories of moneymakers.
“I am still a journalist after all,” Leupold said.
She earned a master’s in magazine journalism from New York University and a bachelor’s in print journalism from Pepperdine University.
Leupold also teaches communications for the University of Phoenix.
When not in front of a computer or a classroom, Leupold plays right field for the DPs kickball team in Venice and was recently chosen the All Star female player.
The semi-coolness of the 7-year-old pastime offsets some of Leupold’s other hobbies such as sorority alumni book club and musical theater.
Leupold recently moved to Naples next to the county line in Long Beach.
