Aliso Viejo-based Fluor Corp. was named America’s most admired engineering and construction company, based on a survey conducted for Fortune magazine’s annual list.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s regional laboratory in Irvine finished second at the 2004 Laboratory of the Year competition sponsored by R & D; Magazine and the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association. The facility, designed by Los Angeles-based Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership and Omaha, Neb.’s HDR Inc., was recognized for its dramatic design and innovation characteristics.

Shea Properties in Aliso Viejo, part of Walnut-based J.F. Shea Co., received a 2003 National Multifamily Customer Service Award for Excellence from CEL & Associates, a satisfaction benchmark company specializing in residential customer satisfaction surveys.

Callipso Corp., a Santa Ana-based provider of Internet telecommunications services, received an Investors’ Choice Award from VentureWire, which is part of the Dow Jones Co. The award recognizes technology companies that are positioned for long-term success in the communications industry. This year 10 companies were selected from 72.

California State University, Fullerton ranked eighth in the nation among the top 25 institutions for enrollment of Hispanic women, according to a report by the Hispanic Outlook in Education magazine. The school also ranked 14th in the nation for the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to women.

Barbara Finlayson-Pitts, a professor of chemistry at the University of California, Irvine, received the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Advances in Environmental Science and Technology. John Hemminger, also a UCI chemistry professor, received the Arthur W. Adamson Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Surface Chemistry.

UCI psychologist Roxane Cohen Silver was appointed to the Academe and Policy Research Senior Advisory Committee, a national panel that will provide advisory services to the Homeland Security Advisory Council, which advises Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge.

Bruce Dehning, assistant professor of accounting at Chapman University, was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to teach at Tomas Bata University in Zlin, in the Czech Republic. He will become a member of the university’s faculty of Informatics and Management during the spring 2005 semester.

InSight Health Services Corp., a Lake Forest-based provider of medical diagnostic imaging services, received a Bronze California Team Excellence Award, along with two honorable mentions, from the California Council for Excellence in its 2003 competition.

Abrams California Health Insurance Agency was named the top producing agency by the Blue Cross of California among the 23,000 agents and brokers that sell Blue Cross products and services in California.

The Building Industry Association of Southern California, an affiliate of the California Building Industry Association and the National Association of Home Builders, gave David Young of Laguna Beach-based Young Building Corp. an Honorary Lifetime Member award. Young served as the first president of the BIA Orange County Chapter in 1967.

The South Coast Apartment Association named Irvine-based Sares-Regis Group Developer of the Year for its Watermarke Apartments & Townhomes de Luxe in Irvine.

The California State Assembly named Cassie DeYoung, a board member of the Orange County Trans-portation Authority and a Laguna Niguel councilwoman, as its Woman of the Year for the 73rd Assembly District.

Santa Ana-based Monterey Carpets was awarded a 2004 Gold Award for Design Excellence for its moresque silk design. Design Journal, a national trade publication for interior design professionals, gives the awards.

A case handled by William O’Hare, administrative partner at Snell & Wilmer’s Orange County office, was named one of the top 10 defense verdicts of 2003 by the Los Angeles Daily Journal. In the case, O’Hare served as defense counsel for Advanced MT Technology Inc. in its verdict against Samsung Electronics Co.

The city of Irvine recognized Irvine-based businesses for integrating family-friendly policies and programs, such as dependent care, flexible hours, wellness resources and financial assistance, into their operations. Sonnet Technologies Inc. received the small company award; RBF Consulting was the medium company recipient; Ernst & Young took home the large company award; and Best Software Inc., part of Britain’s The Sage Group PLC, received an honorable mention.

The Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce and South Coast Metro Alliance presented the fifth Annual Hall of Fame Awards. The Leadership in the Arts award was given to the South Coast Repertory Theatre and its founders David Emmes and Martin Benson. The Individual Achievement honor was presented to Werner Escher, South Coast Plaza’s executive director of domestic and international markets. Bob Teller, founder of the Orange County Market Place, received the Community Spirit award.

The National Arbor Day Foundation named Anaheim a “Tree City USA” for its efforts to plant and maintain trees in the city. This is the 20th straight year that the city has been honored with this award.

Mission San Juan Capistrano docent Lee Goode received a 2003 Service Excellence Award in the arts & culture category from the Orange County Tourism Council. The award recognizes Goode’s service as a Mission docent for four years.
