Irvine-based Masimo Corp., a maker of oxygen monitors, ranked No. 7 in the medical device industry category in the 2006 Patent Scorecard by ipIQ, which works with companies on patents and other intellectual property issues. The Patent Scorecard measures patent quality, technological strength and breadth of impact. It’s published in Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Technology Review and tracks the patent portfolios of more than 2,500 of the world’s top technology companies.

Irvine-based Epicor Software Corp., a provider of business software, was selected by Start-It magazine as one of the “Hottest Companies of 2006.” The annual award program recognizes software and technology companies that have developed innovative products for the manufacturing industry. Nominees are judged on a variety of criteria including revenue growth and important client wins, as well as significant events and accomplishments during the past year.

Ten attorneys at Costa Mesa-based Rutan & Tucker LLP were named 2006 Rising Stars by Law & Politics Magazine: Phillip Blanchard, John Bradley; Steven Goon, John Hamilton Jr., Aron Hansen; Michael Houston, Jeffery Melching, John Ramirez, Brian Sinclair, and Karen Walter. Rising Stars are chosen by in Southern California through a peer survey. The designation recognizes the top 2.5% of peers in California who are age 40 or younger or who have been practicing 10 years or less.

Irvine-based architectural and planning company KTGY Group Inc. won awards for several projects at the 29th annual Major Achievement in Marketing Excellence Awards. The Building Industry’s Sales and Marketing Council of Southern California hosted the awards. The company’s Seagate project received the Best Attached Community of the Year award. The Oceana project (plan two) won the Best Architecture Design Detached Under 2,000 Square Feet award. The Wavecrest project earned the Best Detached Community of the Year $550,000 to $750,000 award, and its plan three won the Best Architecture Design Detached 2,001 to 3,000 Square Feet award. The Aldea project won the Best Product Design Detached Under 2,200 Square Feet award.

Richard Lusk, founder and chief executive of Foldera Inc. in Huntington Beach, was selected as a nominee for the 2006 World Technology Award, presented by the World Technology Network in association with the New York Stock Exchange, Dow Chemical Co., Time magazine and CNN, among others. Nominees are World Technology members chosen by fellow members in considering innovative work with potential long-term significance. Foldera offers Web services.

Dennis Javens, town manager of Ladera Ranch for Merit Cos., received a 2006 Vision Award from the California Association of Community Mana-gers, a trade group for community managers. Javens won the award in the Communications Management, Level II category for his development of an open-air farmer’s market at Ladera Ranch.

Irvine-based RBF Consulting, along with the city of Irvine and Caltrans District 12 in Orange County, received a 2006 Caltrans Excellence in Transportation Award in the Transportation-Related Facilities category for the San Diego (I-405) Freeway/Jeffrey Trail Overcrossing project. The project completed a pedestrian and bicycle trail link in the Jeffrey Open Space Spine. The consulting company provides planning, civil engineering and survey services.

The Laguna Beach Coastline Pilot and Huntington Beach Independent, two Times Community Newspapers weeklies that are part of the Los Angeles Times, won nine awards in the 2005 California Better Newspapers Contest by the California Newspaper Publishers Association. The Coastline Pilot won first- and second-place awards for news coverage and general editorial. The Independent won second-place awards for general editorial and layout design.
