McCarthy Building Cos. won a Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award from the Associated General Contractors of America for work completed on the $203 million St. Joseph Hospital Patient Care Center in Orange. St. Louis-based McCarthy has its Southern California division in Newport Beach.

Westin South Coast Plaza director of sales and marketing Michael Mustafa took home the Starwood Hotels Sales Leader of the Year Award. Deborah Lew was named Convention Services Manager of the Year.

Robert Thornton was ranked third among the nation’s top environmental lawyers by United States Lawyer Rankings. Thornton is a partner at the Irvine office of Nossaman Guthner Knox & Elliott LLP.

Lula Halfacre was named Citizen of the Year by the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce. Halfacre owns Traditional Jewelers at Fashion Island, is a commodore for the chamber and has served as chair of its board of directors. The award recognizes long-term efforts to improve the community.

The Irvine Chamber of Commerce recognized State Street Investment Manager Solutions as its Business of the Year. State Street has a program that allows its employees to volunteer at several local nonprofits.

Paul Viviano received the Healthcare Visionary Award for his leadership role as chairman and chief executive at Anaheim-based Alliance Imaging Inc. The company provides medical scans for patients.

Newport Beach-based Wonderland Bakery won a National Association of Women Business Owners merchandise contest. The bakery created association-branded baked goods, which are available for sale on the group’s Web site.

The city of Irvine received a Green Leadership Award for its energy conservation program at the Green California Summit and Exposition. The project distributed 60,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs along with educational materials to Irvine residents. The light bulbs should save residents $420,000 annually.

The Greater Excellence in Management and Maintenance Awards recognized local property managers in 38 categories. For Rent Media Solutions was named South Coast Apartment Association Industry Part-ner of the Year. Robert Heer Jr. of To’ and Mo’ Towing was named Individual of the Year. Regional Manager of the Year honors went to Yunmi Martin of The Irvine Company Apartment Communities.

Leah Carlisle was named Volunteer of the Year by the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. Carlisle serves as volunteer coordinator aboard the tall ship Pilgrim. She is editing an illustrated version of Richard Henry Dana’s “Two Years Before the Mast.”

Paul Castillo was named California Big Brother of the Year for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Laura Aguirre was named Big Sister of the Year for OC. Vinnie Castillo earned Big Brother of the Year for OC. Each mentors local youth.

Orange County Court Appointed Special Advocates recognized Costa Mesa-based Idea Hall as a Corporate Honoree at its Celebration of Children gala. Idea Hall has provided design and other services to the group since 2003. The fundraiser generated $650,000 to help mentor abused and neglected kids.

Maternal Outreach Management System honored founder Dottie Andrews at its Celebrates Mothers Founder’s Tea. Andrews also was a founding board member for Healthy Smiles for Kids of OC and cofounded the Parent-to-Parent support program for Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

CHOC at Mission, the Mission Viejo arm of the Orange hospital, was recognized as having one of the nation’s top five Best Nursing Teams by Advance for Nurses magazine. The team of nurses was recognized for its creation and implementation of online clinical documentation.

Anaheim Public Utilities received a Reliable Public Power Provider award from the American Public Power Association. The award recognizes utility companies for providing customers with the safest and most reliable electric service.
