Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach named Dr. Richard Afable as its new chief executive on Monday.
He is set to replaced longtime Hoag boss Michael Stephens, who retires Aug. 31. Afable is slated to start at Hoag on Aug. 15, the hospital said.
Hoag found Afable through a national search, the hospital said.
Afable currently is executive vice president and chief medical officer at Catholic Health East, a large not-for-profit hospital operator in Newtown Square, Pa., a Philadelphia suburb.
His background also includes serving as founder and president of Preferred Physician Partners, a practice management company that supported doctors’ groups and physicians’ networks.
The married father of three also had a private practice in Chicago, specializing in internal medicine and geriatrics.
Afable holds a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University in Chicago and his medical degree from the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine. He has a master’s degree in public health from the University of Illinois School of Public Health and a certificate in business administration from Villanova University.
