The Fox Fullerton Historic Theatre and the Discovery Science Center of Orange County received gifts from the California Cultural Historical Endowment. The Fox theater received a little more than $1.9 million. The science center received about $1.1 million. At the science center, the money will go to a project that demonstrates the significance of the aerospace industry in California. Backers of the Fox plan to use the money to restore the movie theater.

The Weingart Foundation donated a $1 million grant to the Outdoor Education Center in Santa Ana. About $800,000 of the money will be used for building, permits, project completion and scholarship administration. The remaining $200,000 will go toward scholarships, also called camperships, in fall 2008. The site will host astronomy, ranch and mining camps.

Newport Beach-based Pacific Life Foundation, the foundation arm of Newport Beach’s Pacific Life Insurance Co., gave $1 million to the Public Policy Institute of California. The money will endow the Thomas C. Sutton chair in policy research. The chair title will be held by a senior research management employee of the institute. Thomas Sutton was chief executive of Pacific Life for 17 years until this year and has been with the company for a total of 43.

Chapman University science faculty members received a grant of $500,000 from the Irvine Health Foundation. Fred Caporaso, Frank Frisch and Kenneth Sumida are members of Chapman’s Wilkinson College of Letters and Sciences. The team is working to identify the number of people in OC who are have osteoporosis and develop treatment strategies.

Mission Hospital and Lexus Mission Viejo raised more than $260,000 at their 15th annual golf tournament at Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club. Proceeds will go toward supporting Mission Hospital’s expansion projects.

The Child Abuse Prevention Center’s annual charity golf classic raised more than $64,000. The money will fund its in-home prevention programs. Wells Fargo Bank presented the event for the third straight year, which featured a cocktail reception, silent auction and awards ceremony.

The Harriet E. Pfleger Foundation contributed $35,000 to Big Brothers Big Sister of OC to support the Bright Futures program. The program offers female empowerment activities to girls ages 10 to 16, including career days, self-defense classes and college campus tours. The donation was made through Angelitos de Oro, a volunteer women’s group.

HSBC Bank in Irvine gave $5,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of Laguna Beach to celebrate national Boys & Girls Club Day for Kids. The day is designed to celebrate and honor children with a slew of activities including air hockey and ping-pong. HSBC employees also volunteered their time at the event.

The University of California Irvine’s School of Social Ecology received a $2,000 gift from Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. in Irvine. The money will go toward the university’s department of criminology, law and society’s inaugural joint graduate symposium on crime and law. The symposium is held on behalf of Waseda University in Japan.

Alacer Corp. in Foothill Ranch pledged to contribute half of its profits from Emergen-C Pink vitamin sales to support the fight against breast cancer. The maker of Emergen-C energy and vitamin drink mix partnered with actress Liv Tyler and her family to launch the Emergen-C Pink program.
