Chapman: $6M from apartment King

The Jerrold and Jacqueline Glass Foundation gave $6 million to Chapman University to build housing and fund a couple of academic positions.

Jerrold A. Glass, who died in 2003, was the founder of Irvine-based Western National Group, a 43-year-old apartment owner, manager and developer.

Chapman officials said the gift will fund construction of the Jerrold and Jacqueline Glass Residence Hall, the Jerrold A. Glass Chair in Finance and the Jacqueline M. Glass Chair in Theatre and Music.

The gift was the fifth-largest ever for Chapman.

Western National manages more than 23,000 apartments and owns roughly 13,000 of them.

The Harry and Grace Steele Foundation gave $4.5 million to the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach. The group plans to use the money to build an interpretive center, including a hands-on museum and two classrooms.

PacifiCare Health Systems in Cypress, now part of Minnesota’s UnitedHealth Group Inc., built two “homes in a box” for Habitat for Humanity of Orange County’s Operation Home Delivery to help hurricane rebuilding efforts. The homes were shipped to the Dallas Habitat for Humanity affiliate, where they will be completed for families affected by last year’s hurricanes. PacifiCare has been active in hurricane relief efforts, donating $1 million to the city of Houston’s Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund and $466,000 to the Red Cross’ Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund.

Through a fund-raising broadcast on radio station KFI-AM, Costa Mesa-based Ayres Hotels raised $700,000 for the Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. The company’s Donald Ayres III also donated trailer loads of blankets, sheets and other bedding to Afghanistan, which he personally collected from some of his family’s hotels in Southern California.

Project Play-house raised $525,000 at its annual event. The event is a fund-raiser for HomeAid Orange County, a nonprofit that helps build and renovate shelters for homeless men, women and children.

Choc Padrinos raised more than $120,000 for Children’s Hospital of Orange County and Choc at Mission from its Oscar Night America party held at the Disneyland Hotel. The amount topped last year’s $75,000.

The Mark Chapin Johnson Foundation donated $50,000 to the Orange Main Library & History Center’s campaign to expand it. An entryway of the expanded library will be named after the foundation.

Quick Loan Funding gave $50,000 to local charities and nonprofits. They were: Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, $5,000 in 2005 and $5,000 in 2006; HomeAid $5,000; Olive Crest, $5,000; Orange County Performing Arts Center, $10,000; Laura’s House, $4,000; Choc Follies, $5,000 in 2005 and $5,000 in 2006; Choc Padrinos, $5,000; Canyon Acres, $1,499; and Boys Home and Girls Home, $2,500.

Santa Ana’s Girls and Boys Town of Southern California received more than $40,000 from Aliso Viejo’s Lennar Homes, part of Miami-based Lennar Corp. The money will go toward the group’s Compton Shelter Project, which is set to break ground this month.

Habitat for Humanity of Orange County and the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Pacific Southwest Region are building one home in Placentia as part of an effort to create additional homeownership opportunities for low-income families. The house is set to cost $175,000 to build. Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Financial are building 312 homes nationwide this year.

Irvine’s Sage Credit Co. donated $10,000 to the Mission Hospital Foundation for its Valiant Women Afternoon Tea. The company has been named presenting sponsor of the event. Money raised from the event is set to go toward the expansion of Mission Hospital’s Emergency Department and Gotschall Family Trauma Pavilion.

Costa Mesa-based Rutan & Tucker LLP had 17 lawyers and staff members volunteer to help build affordable housing in Cypress. The firm is part of Habitat for Humanity of Orange County’s Lawyers for Humanity group, along with nine other law firms. Together, the law firms pledged a total of $25,000 and about 1,000 hours of work on the project.
