Downey Savings and Loan Association, a unit of Newport Beach-based Downey Financial Corp., awarded certificates of deposit totaling $5,000 to three students from its Banking Basics’ Program contest. The bank and the Capistrano Unified School District sponsor the program for the district’s fifth graders. An award of $2,500 also was donated to the three winners’ schools.

Coastline Community College Foundation received $122,000 from the college’s annual Visionary of the Year Awards Gala in Huntington Beach.

Irvine-based New Century Financial Corp., a subprime lender, donated $50,000 to the California Association of Realtors Housing Affordability Fund as part of its National Homeownership Month participation.

Joe De Laudurantey, member and past president of the Roosters Foundation of Orange County, received the Director of Volunteers in Agencies Award. The award is sponsored by the Orange County Register and Wells Fargo Bank. De Ladurantey received the award for his work within the Roosters and his service to the community’s children in need.

The Newport Beach Public Library Foundation received a $10,000 donation from the Ebell Club of Newport Beach. The group particularly was active in the formation of the Balboa Branch Library in 1925.

Orange County United Way raised $25 million from its 2004-2005 campaign, which will address health and human care. The Irvine operation of Alcon Laboratories Inc., which makes eye drugs, surgical products and instruments, received the Dimensions in Giving Award, the group’s highest honor, for raising more than $401,631 during the year.

The Ocean Institute’s annual “Build-a-Boat Challenge,” in which corporate teams design, build and race boats, raised $44,000 for the preservation of the tall ships Pilgrim and Spirit of Dana Point. The two winning teams were sponsored by Irvine’s Toshiba America Electronics Components Inc. and Dana West Youth Sailing Inc.

Cruise for a Cure in Newport Harbor raised $31,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Connie and Ted O’Connor, members of the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Corona del Mar, were co-chairs of the event.

Providence Speech and Hearing Center in Orange, which is affiliated with Children’s Hospital of Orange County and St. Joseph’s Hospital, received $65,000 from its 21st Annual Golf Classic. Orange-based The Word and Brown Cos. and Merrill Lynch Umphrey/Koby Group sponsored the event, held at the Newport Beach Country Club.

The Dhont Family Foundation donated $1 million to build Children’s Hospital of Orange County’s Outpatient Observation Unit. Almost three-fourths of the children who will use the unit will be cancer patients. It will be located in the CHOC West building.

Junior Achievement of Orange County and the Inland Empire received $100,000 from Option One Mortgage Corp., a subprime mortgage lender and a unit of H & R; Block Inc. The money will be used for programs at local elementary schools and for its Stock Market Challenge program, which brings students and business leaders together to help raise money.

Irvine-based Dana Capital Group Inc., a mortgage lender, donated $15,000 to HomeAid Orange County. The company’s donation put it in the HomeAid President’s Circle of Donors.

Twenty-three Orange County groups received $230,950 from PacifiCare Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Cypress-based PacifiCare Health Systems Inc.

The Valiant Women of Mission Hospital raised $60,000 at its Ninth Annual Afternoon Tea at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel. The proceeds will benefit pediatric services of the emergency department expansion at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.

Kathy Pearson was named chairperson of the 14th annual Komen Orange County Race for the Cure to be held at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. This is Pearson’s fourth year as chair or co-chair of the event.

The Annual Holiday Breakfast by the Manufactured Housing Educational Trust honored local officials serving OC cities, and donated $6,000 the charities of the officials’ choice. The seven honored were: Stanton Mayor Harry Dotson, Los Alamitos Mayor Ken Parker, Huntington Beach Councilman Keith Bohr, Tustin Councilman Jerry Amante, Fountain Valley Councilman John Collins, Orange Mayor Pro Tem Carolyn Cavecche, and Fullerton Councilwoman Sharon Quirk.

The Community Spirit Award was presented to the Assistance League of Garden Grove for its work in helping to provide free clothes and low-cost dental care to children as well as for other charitable works.

At the Annual Rotary International Assembly in Anaheim, more than 520 Rotary volunteer leaders from six continents lent a hand to Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County of Orange and packed 58,000 pounds of food to be distributed to needy families. The service project commemorated Rotary’s 100th anniversary and Second Harvest National Food Bank’s 25th anniversary.
