Mark Moses, president and chief executive of Platinum Capital Group Inc., a mortgage company in Irvine, raised more than $100,000 for the Neuroscience Institute at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County. The money was raised through Moses’ participation in the Ironman Triathlon, a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run, which had to be completed in 17 hours. Moses dedicated the race to his 5-year-old son, Mason, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor a few years ago and treated at Children’s Hospital. Mason since has recovered. Moses also is a director on the hospital’s foundation board.
Santa Ana-based Ingram Micro Inc., the largest distributor of technology products, helped establish a new media center, the Ingram Micro Media Resource Center, for the Orange County High School of the Arts. Ingram donated equipment, space planning service, furniture for 30 work stations, computers, monitors, a color printer, software for arts students and helped with installation. The center is set to be used by 1,300 arts students yearly for research, word processing, math remediation, as well as for creating film and TV and visual arts projects.
BioLucent Inc., an Aliso Viejo company that makes a mammogram pad, raised more than $71,000 at the MS Challenge Walk for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The amount is the highest raised at the event. Some 350 people took part in the three-day, 50-mile walk and raised $1.1 million, which will go toward multiple sclerosis research and programs.
Irvine-based MyPrint Corp. donated printing services valued at $50,000 for the Orange County Barons’ Ball benefiting the American Cancer Society. Services included printing save-the-date cards, forms for pig racing, underwriting brochures and invitations. Money raised from the event will help with cancer research, patient services, advocacy and educational programs for OC families.
The Huntington Beach Restaurant Association raised nearly $50,000 at its Taste of Huntington Beach. The funds were donated to the Huntington Beach Children’s Library and the 301 Marine Battalion at Camp Pendleton. The association includes more than 50 restaurants and businesses.
The Century Council, a nonprofit group of alcohol companies that work on underage drinking education and drinking and driving programs, gave $20,000 to California State University, Fullerton. The money will help with the university’s Century Council Alcohol 101 Plus program and other alcohol-education programs. Nascar driver Robby Gordon presented the check to school officials.
Golden West College in Huntington Beach raised more than $16,000 at its first Chefs for Scholarships. More than 20 local restaurants provided tasting samples of food and drinks. The money will be used toward scholarships.
The Capistrano Valley Conservancy, a nonprofit devoted to preserving the historical and cultural resources in San Juan Capistrano Valley, donated $15,000 for preservation of the museums Serra Chapel and the Mission San Juan Capistrano. The donation was a portion of proceeds raised from the first annual Capistrano Valley Plein Air Art Festival.
The Wellness Community-Orange County, a nonprofit in Santa Ana that supports cancer patients and their families, received a $10,000 20-20 Vision grant from the Irvine Health Foundation. The award includes public relations services to help raise awareness of the group. Wellness Community-OC was chosen for its treatment of physical, mental and emotional health through support as well as health services. The foundation gave 20 grants to mark its 20th anniversary.
